OK, I misspoke. The hearings themselves aren't important – I agree with you. It will be sounds and fury. The appointment is important though: I think we are mistaken in assuming that replacing one liberal nut job with another doesn't change things. It might not now, but who's to say how the interactions will change with the appointment after Kaagan.

Sadly, I agree that by the time hearings come about, the decision has already been made. It's just a formality.

The Kagan hearings aren't important. Interesting, but not important. It is a fait accompli. Even if the Republicans had the stones (which they don't) to really challenge the appointment, they don't have the clout. Healthcare reform was important and look what happened there. The hearings will be a few days of politicians pontificating to try and score points with their constituencies.
To quote Shakespeare,
